Fan Fiction 3

 Chapter Six: The Road South

The road out of the Shire from the north was in terrible repair.

“But we cannot complain now, can we Pip?” asked Billy Begroot of his little friend. “I don’t know what I would have done without you back there to help me. I’m sorry we quarreled. Let’s never do that again.”

Mister Pip looked back with his glittering eyes and smiled in agreement.

They were heading south. As Billy’s family had been in the barrel trade business he knew the many paths that led away below both the Shire and Bree. He would try his hand in those lands perhaps, far away from any authorities.

“Oh but Mister Pip, I feel so bad about our falling out that I have done something to make it up to you. I will be lonely without all our friends but I am sure you will be lonely more so than I. So here, I’ve a surprise. I’ve found a lovely lady friend for you. I’m sure you will adore her.”

That was when Billy pulled another puppet from his pocket. He had worked long and hard on her while he thought Pip was sleeping. “I’d like you to meet June Bug!” Billy said with a laugh. The female puppet was made to resemble Mister Pip.

“Miss June Bug, I’d like you to meet Mister Pip!”

The two puppets regarded each other with suspicion, then attraction.

“Ah, I think we have a match! Why, I can see marriage soon, then maybe children,” joked Billy to himself. He laughed, and laughed, and laughed in the most frightful manner until even the birds in the trees fled. Billy continued laughing and laughing as he headed down the long, long road. Where it would take them was anyone’s guess. But Mister Pip, that jolly fellow, kept one eye on his friend and one set on the road ahead, ever alert for adventure.
